President Johnson visits American Samoa

Lyndon Baines Johnson Tropical Medical Center is named after the 36th President of the United States. President Johnson visited American Samoa on October 18th, 1966. This marked the beginning of construction of the hospital located in the village of Faga'alu, American Samoa. The facility was completed in 1968.

LBJ Tropical Medical Center is located in Faga'alu, American Samoa. American Samoa is a territory of the United States, and is located in the South Pacific. The population of American Samoa is approximately 65,000 residents. The LBJ Tropical Medical Center, a 128-bed general acute care hospital, is the only hospital in the territory. The Medical Center provides a reasonable scope of general inpatient and outpatient services covering: medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), eye, pediatrics, and renal dialysis. The LBJ hospital is the only clinical laboratory, diagnostic imaging, and outpatient pharmacy services in American Samoa. LBJ Tropical Medical Center is also a semi-autonomous authority.

Outside LBJ Hospital

LBJ has 4 major departments: Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, and OB/GYN. Our facilities include an eight-bed, combined ICU (Peds/Adult/Medical/Surgical/Cardiac), a Labor & Delivery unit, NICU/Newborn Nursery, a 4 suite OR/PAR, a 14 station ESRD Dialysis unit. Specialty clinics included are: Dental, EENT, Opthamology, Pediatrics, Obstetrics, Surgery, Mental Health, Physical Therapy, and a busy Emergency/Family Practice Clinic.

The Emergency/Family Practice clinic provides 24-hour service, and is staffed by its own physicians. Physician extenders, nurse practitioners and physician assistants are on staff to provide care in the Medical Center, and outlying public health clinic and dispensaries.
